FINALLY BIRDS ARE COMING BACK!!

Started the day by going to Dow Wetlands the wind still made it  very chilly. While  driving in we saw Brown Headed Cowbirds. The ponds seem to hold an assortment of water fowl.
Gadwalls,Buffleheads, Ring Neck Ducks and  Killdeer and Song Sparrows  where singing in the open field area.

We checked out the bird boxes near the Lambton Generater Station and found Tree Swallows seem to have taken up residence in a couple of the boxes.

On Bickford Line we stopped and found 2 Eastern Phoebes singing to each other as well as a ground hog.

Mckellar Tract was another spot we checked out and while walking threw the open grassland we flushed up a wild turkey almost scared me to death. We found 4 Wood ducks and watched them go back and forth checking out the nesting boxes it would be nice if they do nest.

On Greenway Road it was a surprise to see all the swans were gone most of the field had lots of Ring Billed and Herring Gulls. There was a few Northern Shoveler but most of the water that was lying in the fields a couple of weeks ago is now gone.
Pinery Feeders were also very quiet we saw Tufted Titmouse, Black Capped Chickadees , Cardinals and one very cute red squirrel underneath the feeders.
Still not wishing to pack in the birding a trip to Wawanosh Wetlands at dusk proved that yes there is American Woodcocks at the far end we found 2 calling back and forth to each other.
There was one lonely pied billed grebe swimming with Canada Geese.

The best find was an Eastern Towhee rustling threw the underbrush. This is the earliest we have seen.

It was finally warm enough for a Comma butterfly first one of the season for me to be out flying around.

  1. Where was your towhee? I was at the pinery all day today and didn't get it! But there was an early Pine Warbler on Riverside Trail. Also, was your grebe on the lookout on the trail by the visitor center? There were two there today.

  2. Hi Sean
The towhee was at Wawanosh near the highway 402 end.The Pied Billed Grebe was visible from the new bench area near the bridge that goes to Nature Way. Haven't had much time to bird lately as I am back to work. The birds seem to be coming back hoping to do Pelee this coming weekend
